DRI probe unravels women of all ages carrier network in Malabar

De Wiki Linux62.

KOZHIKODE: Interrogation of the two women, including an airhostess accused of smuggling 39kg of gold worth Rs 12 crore through various airports in the country, has revealed that the gold smuggling racket had an elaborate network of female recruits from Malabar to smuggle contraband gold.

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sources said that apart from Air India Express airhostess, VS Hiromasa and her friend Rahila Cheerayi, four other female carriers were employed by the racket based in Koduvally.

DRI officials have registered cases against three people including Koduvally residents' Shahbaz, Abu Laiz and Nabeel hailing from Thalassery in connection with the case. Officials suspect that all three are hiding abroad.

DRI officials are also probing if the racket operated by Shahbaz had links with TK Faiz, the kingpin in the Nedumbassery gold smuggling case. "As of now we don't have any solid links connecting the two, but we are not ruling out the possibility as the accused are all from the same locality, lead flashy lifestyles and followed the same modus operandi-using women as carriers," an official said.

Officials said that Shahbaz is suspected to be the kingpin and he along with Abu Laiz had channelled money made from smuggling operations into substantial investments in a number of businesses in Dubai and Kerala. DRI is in the process of tracing the investments made by the operators which an official said were of staggering proportions.

According to sources, Rahila was also Shahbaz's manager. "She is a well-qualified management professional and has been handling his company accounts even while taking up assignments as an independent SAP consultant," an official said. DRI officials are on the lookout for four women carriers employed by the racket, including the mother and daughter duo Jaseela and Parveen and another named Shalini. Officials believe that they have gone underground.
